Want a tan without using sunbeds?

Scientists have developed a tiny implant that be placed under the skin to give a three-month tan without using sunbeds, it emerged today. The capsule is no bigger than a grain of rice but it is implanted under the skin and stimulates the production of melanin. 

The naturally occurring pigment controls the colour of the skin and how much UV radiation is absorbed. By releasing the chemical, the skin would become darker and could resemble a healthy bronzed tan. Although the implant was initially developed by medics in order to alleviate skin conditions, experts believe it could be taken up by the beauty industry. 

An estimated three million people a year use sunbeds and any products that could improve tanning are likely to be popular. Millions more use spray tans. Lesley Rhodes, professor of experimental dermatology at Manchester University, said that the implant could become an alternative method of tanning. 'Potentially, it does offer an alternative to commercial sunscreens and there are lots of senior scientists who are convinced it's safe,' she told the Times. 

Professor Rhodes stressed that more research into the long-tern side-effects of using the implant would been to be done until it could be rolled out onto the market. The makers of the chip, Clinuvel, said they developed it to help patients who suffer from skin disorders. The chemical implant would also help those organ transplant patients whose anti-rejection drugs increase the risk of skin cancer. The implant has received recognition from Cancer Research UK. 

They have acknowledged its potential to prevent malignant skin cancer and reduce the risks of sunbeds. A statement on the Clinuvel claims: 'To date, Clinuvel has spent over $80 million developing the Scenesse implant drug product as a therapeutic photoprotective drug for patients who are most at risk from UV and sun exposure. 

'Scenesse has a relatively short half life (less than 50 minutes) and trials to date have raised no serious safety concerns; thus far the drug is well tolerated by patients. The implant drug product has been chosen for its ease of use in dermatology.' If the implant is used in the cosmetics industry, it would be following in the footsteps of Botox, which started out as a muscle relaxant before being used in anti-wrinkle treatment.

Fun ways to improve your mobile signal

A simple method which involves cutting a 20cm piece of insulated wire and wrapping it around a cocktail stick to create a home-made antenna. Strip off a few mms of insulation and remove the rubber plug in the antenna port. 

Then plug in the wire and tape the coil onto the top corner of the phone leaving a few cms to pick up the signal. Not the most fashionable solution but very effective. Solder two large tin cans together and use some copper wire to attack to the antenna port in the phone. 

Although this looks slightly odd it can raise the number of bars by two or three levels. Best kept in the boot of the car for emergencies in the great outdoors rather than walking down the street, A simple paper clip can make an excellent makeshift ariel. 

Stretch one arm of the clip outwards and use plyers to bend a section of around 2mm. Simply plug this into the antenna jack and tape down the remaining parts of the paperclip. 

Effective for such a simple solution Although your battery may look strong enough to attempt a call it actually requires more power to find a signal. 

If you find you are having signal problems, try to keep your battery charged to 2 bars or higher. It goes without saying that it is easier to pick up a signal from outside. But If you are having reception problems on the street try walking to the nearest junction as they typically have better coverage.

Many UK areas 'still don't have adequate access to 3G mobile technology'

Researchers discovered that several major towns and cities did not have round-the-clock access to the coverage despite claims that more than 90 per cent of the country was covered. 

The survey, which involved almost 45,000 volunteers downloading a special mobile application, found many areas still had “not spots”. 

The results suggest the performance of operators was markedly different throughout the country. Despite claims that most areas of the country had excellent mobile coverage, the survey found large parts of rural Britain had poorer signal than urban neighbourhoods. 

It found that “testers” were only able to receive a 3G signal, which is a requirement for the latest “smartphones”, about three quarters of the time with the rest only able to use 2G technology. Experts say the 2G technology is typically around ten times slower than 3G "mobile broadband". Mobile coverage has become an important part of everyday life with people becoming increasingly reliant on their smartphones to send emails and search the internet as well as making phone calls. 

The lack of coverage has also become a contentious issue for residents in rural and outlying areas of Britain. The survey, undertaken by testing firm Epitiro on behalf of the BBC, collected more than 1.7 million hours worth of data from 44,600 volunteers. More than 42 million locations were tested in every county in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It found that most areas of a city had "excellent coverage" other regions "even quite near the centre where some if not all the networks are just not providing a data connection".

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. 

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

What HP's TouchPad fire sale tells iPad rivals

Hundreds of thousands of TouchPads have been sold in days, after HP announced it would stop manufacturing its would-be iPad competitor. The sudden desirability of the device was of course due to heavy discounting. Currys and PC World were selling their stocks off for just £89, down from the original RRP of £399. 

“All this clamouring for the TouchPad, kind of bittersweet,” she said. According to components analysts, each of the gadgets cost HP at least £180 just to build, so selling the Touchpad for £89 would never have been considered until the firm decided to abandon it. 

But the success of HP’s fire sale may provide clues to others hoping to loosen Apple’s stranglehold on the tablet computing market. The main Google Android tablets, made by Samsung and Motorola, are pitched at around the same £400-ish price point as the iPad. 

But, put together with all the other Android tablets, it’s estimated they are outsold by Apple’s devices eight to one. Given Andoid makers’ weaker marketing, and, crucially, fewer apps, that ratio seems unlikely to change significantly. So the problem becomes circular: the user base is too small for app developers to invest in, so users buy an iPad because there are more apps and the user base gets even smaller relative to Apple’s.

New $99 Android Tablet Launched in India

The Indian market is lately buzzing with affordably priced Android tablets, just this month Bharti Enterprises unveiled its Beetel Magiq and Reliance unveiled its Reliance Tab 3G. 

Now, there is a Bangalore based company called Lakshmi Access Communication Systems (LACS) which have launched yet another Android based tablet in the Indian market. The great news is that this particular device is priced at low as $99 (around 5,000 INR). 

This is a 7-inch tablet device called the Magnum Pepper Tablet PC, which runs Android 2.2 FroYo. It is unclear whether it capacitive or a resistive touchscreen our money is on resistive and of course we will update you once this is clarified. Furthermore, the tablet is powered by an 800 MHz processor, it includes 256MB of RAM, WiFi connectivity, USB 2.0 port and a RJ45 LAN port for wired internet connectivity. 

It lacks 3G support however, the company has mentioned that it is 3G dongle compatible. Additionally, it supports microSD card up to 32GB, has a front facing camera and 2GB of built-in storage. Now, this tablet is definitely quite obsolete due to it is low specifications, but we are still quite impressed with this device has they have tried to compensate for the lack of some hardware, and it is priced incredibly low.

Maruti Suzuki plans to roll out a global car by 2017

As its strengthens the R&D activities, the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is aiming higher with plans to roll out a global car by 2017. 

"Our ultimate aim is to develop a car for the global market. With our new R&D centre at Rohtak getting ready, we will start working on a global car," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Executive Officer (R&D) IV Rao told PTI. The company will develop the car, with some assistance from parent Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC), targeting the European and Japanese markets, he added.

 When asked about any timeline to introduce the car that will be developed mainly by Indian engineers, Rao said: "It is difficult to share any specific time, but we are keeping a target of 2017." In the past, MSI engineers had participated in the development of global models, which have been introduced in India, such as Swift and Ritz. MSI is at present working on an indigenously developed small car for the Indian market that is likely to be launched next year. Without sharing any detail, 

Rao said: "It is a totally new model, but will be developed on an existing platform." However, sources close to the development said the car will be powered by a 800cc engine and will be positioned along with the company's current best seller 'Alto'. MSI is spending up to Rs 1,500 crore to set up a R&D centre at Rohtak, which will be SMC's only such significant centre outside Japan, to scale up its vehicle development programme and become self-reliant. 

 The firm currently depends on SMC for its model design and development programme. Its existing models are developed by SMC with inputs from Indian engineers. MSI is at present strengthening its R&D division by enhancing its capability to develop a full model on its own to become the hub of research activities for the SMC. In its Annual Report for 2010-11, the company has said that its R&D team is on the path to acquire capability to make full body changes indigenously so that it can be "the R&D hub of SMC in Asia outside Japan". 

 The firm is increasing its R&D manpower by over 20 % to more than 1,300 people in 2011-12 from 1,070 people in the last fiscal. During FY'11, MSI spent Rs 416.3 crore on R&D activities and it was over twice the spending during the previous year, that stood at Rs 173.3 crore. Commenting on these development, MSI Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi had said: "The growth of the Indian market deserves additional and localised R&D capability that can serve India even more closely."

Laksmi Access introduces cost-effective tablets

To cash in on the growing tablet market, Bangalore-based Lakshmi Access Communications Systems Pvt. Ltd. (LACS) on Friday introduced its new range of tablet PCs that comes with many innovative features and is priced between Rs.6,999 and Rs.34,999. 

“We now have four ranges of tablets with 14 variants that come in screen sizes ranging from 4.3 inch to 11.8 inches, where some tablets can be converted into netbooks as they come attached with keyboards and other accessories. The tablets are 3G, WiFi and SIM-enabled depending on the model, while top-end ones are loaded with both Windows and Android operating systems,” Managing Director Mahendraa Kumar D. Jain told journalists here. 

The company, which was the first company to introduce tablets in India last year, has a full-fledged research and design (R&D) centre in Bangalore where it designs India-specific products that are contract-manufactured in China. “We have so far sold over 10,000 tablets…but the new range of products will give a boost to our sales. 

We hope to sell about 3-4 lakh tablets over the next 12 months and achieve a sales target of Rs.800 crore in the current fiscal,” he said. Stating that their goal was to make tablets more accessible to the masses, Mr. Jain said: “We have tied up with some leading banks to provide EMI schemes of up to 12 months, to enable more people to buy our products. 

We will also be tying up with operators to bundle our netbooks.” The company will be setting up its own stores, Easy EZ, to sell its products across India. “Within the next three months there will be 220 stores in all major cities, and this number will go up to 10,000 by the end of 2012 with an investment of Rs.35 crore. “This business model will allow young entrepreneurs to enter the technology space and ride the next big wave in the advancement of technology penetration in India,” Mr. Jain said.

Autonomy shares rocket but HP's drop on deal news

Shares in Hewlett-Packard tumbled more than 20pc to $23.60 yesterday, as investors reacted to a dramatic about-turn in strategy and its £7bn bid for Autonomy. 

 Investors baulked at Hewlett-Packard’s decision to exit the PC market in which it has its roots, and were “gobsmacked” at the 78pc premium it has agreed to pay for the British software company. Tim Steer, a fund manager at Artemis, whose fund had a significant short position on Autonomy and got badly burned by the deal, labelled Hewlett-Packard a “ship without a rudder in a storm”. 

“I hope for Hewlett-Packard’s shareholders’ sake that it has done the required homework and has a clear vision as to how Autonomy fits in with its existing activities. It is very curious that the shares fell eight per cent [on Thursday]. Stocks usually move up ahead of a bid.” 

He added that Autonomy had “banked a great deal” and that its chief executive, Mike Lynch, should perhaps be running Hewlett-Packard instead. Mr Lynch will continue to head Autonomy after the deal is complete, reporting directly to Hewlett-Packard’s chief executive Leo Apotheker. He will use Hewlett-Packard’s 25,000-strong sales force in order to help grow Autonomy.

The Death of an Operating System

I was surprised to hear today's news: HP is discontinuing the development of webOS devices. Back at CES 2009, I webOS smartphone market was a real opportunity to make a big splash. 

I was not alone. Palm's new operating system looked attractive and responsive.But the discussion was robust and it seemed as though Palm had a shot to compete against the iPhone and Android platforms. But Pam was not able to capitalize on the goodwill generated at CES. 

Palm prior to June 2009 was the first film. Until then, most public was the excitement surrounding the unveiling of the first six months of forgetting device. Palm previously failed to make a big impact. Palm's troubles did not end there. 

The company suffered a series of financial setbacks. Ultimately, HP stepped in and took over the Palm. It seemed like the HP's main interest in webOS operating system. Today, that interest seems to have disappeared. HP will support the webOS operations. 

The company said in a statement webOS look for different ways to optimize the software, though what that really means is beyond me. It seems tombstone on the grave of Palm, however. 

Chris and I and the history of Palm and its impact on the mobile device market was about one episode. It is difficult to stress how instrumental it was in Palm pre-smartphone era. 

While I do not own a webOS device, I see the way the operating system to go out hurts. More variety in the market is a good thing - that ultimately benefit consumers as we have companies in the innovation cycle. Could HP is following in the footsteps of IBM?
