The Semifinals Begin on 'America's Got Talent'

Things are about to get pretty real, because America's Got Talent has stepped it up AGAIN! This means that the acts that are only OK will finally be going home, and the favorites from the beginning will move up where they belong. 

I'm talking the likes of Sandou Trio Russian Bar and Team iLuminate, performing tonight! Oh, and most of the acts will/should add fire. Sharon explains that she doesn't want predictability and the judges don't want safe. Zuma Zuma is neither of those things. But will they add more fire? One of the members of Zuma Zuma actually died from falling during their act.

What the hell? This is even without fire, which they DID add. They stacked some chairs/men and limboed under some fire. Despite adding fire and tiger print, and stacking men like Jenga blocks again, I didn't think it was as exciting as the last performances they've done. In their defense, those were actual chairs stacked up on four glasses. 

"It's very dangerous," they assure us. Beth Ann Robinson danced her way into the Semi-Finals from the YouTube show. I like that tonight, she is dressed like a muse from Xanadu. I'd like to see her audition for SYTYCD in four years. This girl is good, but I'm not sure a solo dance act (or any solo act) can win this season against the given competition. 

The judges agree that she is beyond her years in skill and poise. It makes me think of when I was 14, which I would prefer never to be reminded of again. Sandou Trio Russian Bar! They added fire last time, what will it be this time? MORE fire? They're not doing the Bar this time--she's singing on a flying piano. Like Cee Lo! Something tells me this is a terrible idea. 

Piers gives it an X almost immediately. The piano turns upside down but that doesn't change the fact that its a mediocre performances of "Angel of Mine." It was a misstep, more piano bar than Russian Bar. Piers called it the biggest suicide mission this show has ever seen. I kind of forgot about Kevin Colis, but the viewers voted him through so let's check him out again. He sang a song about love, and it was OK. Maybe I'm just still reeling from Sandou Trio Piano Bar. 

Piers gave it an X, which I'm sure is just what Kevin needed to feel good about himself. Sharon said it reminded her of The Wiggles--very sweet but bland and forgettable. Whoa, brutal honesty from Sharon! Desperately, Kevin promises a dimension to his singing that we have not yet seen. Is it fire? Matt Wilhelm has a good chance, as America's choice in the YouTube round. 

Tonight, the bike will be like, symbolic. No fire, but this is pretty much Fighting Gravity with bike tricks. So we love that, right? He did step it up from last time, I think. It was about being bullied! So we won't bully him for one mistake. Piers doesn't know that he could watch it for a full act's length. He may struggle tonight, because he performed fifth. Then he promised something "so crazy" for next time. Promises, promises. PopLyfe is singing "Come Together" and I wasn't totally sure it was the right choice. To their credit, though, I think they've gotten better. 

It was good, even! Howie called it a headlining act, Piers thinks it's going to be a huge band in the coming years, and Sharon said it was a winner. West Springfield Dance Team has had just another week, again, to pull together an act. They've been vampires, jokers, and now they're zombies. To get on Sharon's good side, they're dancing to "Crazy Train." The dancing was pretty cool, and at the end the guy pulled part of his "face" off. Ahhh, I don't know this time. Maybe it's just seeing them three weeks in a row. I still don't like that they have coaches. I love Melissa Villasenor. I want her to do well. I also want her to be the Kinetic King's girlfriend? Tonight she's doing her traditional stand-up act. She did Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, Shakira, and Christina Aguilera. She strung it together much better this time and she's just adorable. If a solo act can take this thing, it's her. After reminding us $1 million is on the line, Nick Cannon introduces Team iLuminate. They can't add fire because it's a light act. It's also a technology act! It was video game themed, and I loved it even more! I mean, give me a break, this is so awesome. Howie prematurely crowned them the million dollar winners, Sharon says they should have been famous forever ago. This is an act I would love to see in person. Fierce Daniel Joseph Baker is being groomed to be the next Prince/Lady Gaga. He's singing Adele's "Turning Tables" on a turning table. It worked, though. I love him so much, and I think America's Got Talent is actually a good fit for him, with all the theatrics. We put the Miami All Stars through such a long time ago. Since then, they've been breaking the stage (literally) with their dance moves. Looks like they're doing a swing thing tonight. Ah, there's just so many of them! So much going on. I think it was great, but maybe I just blacked out from sensory overload. Piers said it was his favorite performance of the whole night. The final act of the evening is Lys Agnes. For her clip package, she literally released a butterfly into the air from the top of a building. She's singing that song from Evanescence that was really big in like, 2002. And she's singing it in your neighbors' Halloween decorations. It was gothic and sort of weird. Her voice is too big for the song. It almost reminded me of Mrs. Miller. I don't know that I loved it, but the judges did. It ended on a creepy note as Howie said, "you know what I wanna do to you?"

No tale of love, only lust

Why would a filmmaker go all out to stick to details of real incidents (including geography, time, modus operandi and circumstances, also acknowledging the building that was the scene of crime) if he really wanted to take creative liberties with the consequence of it all to manufacture a twisted love story when the reality of the case is much richer than the clichés he has had to resort to?

While it can be argued that RGV's fiction probably goes deeper into the reality of murder itself, there's no doubt that the filmmaker was in such a hurry to make a sympathetic film before the judgment that he got social subtext of the case quite wrong. 

People will do anything to protect themselves, even if it means turning your back against love, Mr. Varma. Meenal Baghel, the author of the book ‘Death in Mumbai,' who has documented the Neeraj Grover murder in her book, raises a pertinent question. 

Though Maria was Jerome's girlfriend, did she really love him? Even after her release, Maria has maintained that she's not close to Jerome. The casual sex angle is given filmi legitimacy as an act of thanksgiving by a helpless aspiring actress to the man who gave her a break and the love story between the accused lovers has been romanticised for the screen with absolutely no depth whatsoever, given the heinousness of the crime and the scarring consequences it could have. 

 Instead of giving us that compelling, intense, psychological drama, the film chooses to linger up the skirt and down the blouse, with a pointless sense of perversion. The unflattering bottom-angle shots distract from the emotional quotient. It's tragic when the actors (Poor Mahie Gill is exploited with the shortest skirts and Deepak Dobriyal is reduced to playing an obsessed psychotic nut) are going all out, even if they are a little louder than they ought to be. 

 While Ram Gopal Varma usually revels in crime stories given his intimate portrayals of the underworld (in Satya and Company), the only intimacy we see here is the underworld that's below the belt. Why would any non-porn filmmaker repeatedly choose to go that close to legs throughout the film unless he has a midget crew running around with cameras unable to make eye-contact with actors? The love story itself (written by Rohit G. Banawlikar), despite all its ambitions of projecting the love the accused shared (the film ends with text that informs us that they WANT to be killed together!) ends up looking like a passionate tale of inexplicable lust with the frequency that the boyfriend hogs her face. There is no tenderness or warmth in this love, just jealousy and lust. 

 If the film is somewhat watchable in between all the frequent distraction and constant assaults on aesthetic, it is only because of the inherent drama in the situation — the murder, what led to it and what happened after it. If you set aside your basic urge to know what led to the murder, there's very little that the film offers. It's tabloid recreation, a sensational, titillating reconstruction of events that's glossed over by a cosmetic psychological study and killed by sheer romanticism.

Shilpa gets sensual, to do bold scenes with Chinese actor

The last time we saw Shilpa Shetty on the big screen, she was prancing around on a beautiful beach in a two-piece with John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan for company. 

 And though her Dostana act attracted more eyeballs than she could have imagined, the Bollywood beauty is definitely in the mood to display more than just her much-envied figure. Shilpa, who is playing an Oddisi dancer in her next film The Desire: A Journey of A Woman, has apparently indulged in some seriously bold sequences with co-star Xia Yu in the film. 

 "I had no qualms in doing these scenes as these sequences are an integral part of the film, and have been aesthetically shot, " says Shilpa. Daring notes It does looks like one of the most interesting characters Shilpa has essayed in her 17-year-long career. 

 Which is why it is not surprising that the actress would go to any lengths to make herself look convincing enough on screen. Says a source, "In the film, a world famous Chinese painter is madly in love with Shilpa's character Gautami, but she does not really respond to him. 

 These sequences are a part of the story building up to how far their friendship goes." The actress, who has been looking for a substantial script to come her way since her much-acclaimed performance in Anurag Basu's Life In A Metro, seems more than happy with this project. 

 "The film traces Gautami's journey through a number of years. The love story is beautiful and the passion between the two characters is almost like a painting. I would say that it's my character Gautami, who is bold, and not the scenes per say, " explains Shilpa.

You seem to have found the formula for success... Not at all! As long as luck is on my side, the going will be good. The audience has to love my work for a film to be a hit. 

When you start flying high, God knocks sense into you and tells you, 'Idiot, don't act too smart or you'll fall flat.' It's always about choosing the right option. Are you a bit nervous with the high expectations people have of you and Bodyguard? No, I'm focused on the job at hand.

It's not like I'm in NASA and researching on cars running on water, instead of petrol. In cinema, we're more guided by emotions and gut feeling. Once the audience starts getting tired, they won't like your films. After Dabangg last Eid, you're becoming synonymous with festival releases, just like Aamir Khan had become synonymous with Christmas releases... 

It's not about Eid. If I release a lousy film, then people won't see it. People decide whether they want to see the movie or no after watching the promos. With Bodyguard, I'm catering to all kinds of people. Bodyguard's second half is more for men. 

And they will have khushi ke aansoon in the end. Why would I want you to spend money to get bored and shed tears of sadness? You've managed a casting coup of sorts, Kareena as heroine and Kat as item girl, in Bodyguard... 

No casting coup yaar! Katrina is there in just the song. I've been Katrina's bodyguard so far in real life. So why not in reel life also? At 40 plus, do you feel fit enough to do all these action movies? The reason I started doing all these action films is to get into a fitness routine.

I certainly feel fitter today than I was earlier, and I attribute this to eating correctly and working out regularly. If I indulge in desserts after dinner, then I ensure I burn those calories later. What about writing and directing movies? That's for later jab time kharab hoga, not like it is now. 

When people don't want to see me any more, then I'll think of writing and directing. So would you say this is the best phase of your career? No. I think that is yet to come.

Not A Love Story Movie Review

Anusha Chawla (Mahie Gill), leaves hometown Chandigarh and boyfriend Robin (Deepak Dobriyal) and comes to Mumbai, chasing her dreams to become an actress. She gets a break with the help of a casting agent, Ashish and brings him home one night. 

But the night turns out to be a nightmare, as Robin lands up in Mumbai and kills Ashish in a fit of fury and jealousy. A gruesome tale, the story begins with Anusha (mahie) who wants to become an actress. She comes to Mumbai after convincing her obsessive boyfriend Robin (deepak) and starts looking for a break. She finally gets one with the help of one Ashish (ajay gehi). 

Anusha is on cloud nine and so is Robin. While she goes to celebrate with Ashish and friends, Robin decides to surprise her the next morning. However, after the party, Ashish gets drunk and stays at Anusha's place. In this process, both get close. 

The next morning Robin arrives and understanding what happened, he kills Ashish in blind anger. What happens after that forms the rest of the story. Based on the headline-grabbing case of Kannada actor Maria Susairaj, her boyfriend Jerome Matthew and the murdered television executive Neeraj Grover, Not A Love Story is a startling film. 

Startling, because it captures the nasty, brutal side of seemingly normal and nice people who sometimes, see nothing amiss in the most heinous of crimes. The casualness with which Anusha and Robin try to cover the tracks of their crime, dispose off the body of the victim, make love even while he lies dead and bloodied in the next room fills you with chill and dread. 

The director has come up with a thought provoking storyline and while the presentation was classy, the narrative was gripping. The dialogues were reasonable, the script was alright while the screenplay was tight. Background score was great and two songs were upto the mark. Cinematography was the major highlight. Editing was crisp. 

Costumes were natural while the art department was suiting the moods. Deepak Dobriyal comes up with the right kind of act and fits his role aptly. Mahie Gill was the show stealer, she oozes great sex appeal and has given a gripping performance. Ajay Gehi was brief but good. 

Zakir Hussain was fabulous, he needs to get more chances. Darshan Jariwala was decent. Neil Bhoopalam was natural, Prabhjot Sandhu was moderate. The others did their bit as required. The film is basically an inspiration from the Neeraj Grover murder case but then the makers have not delved much into that subject. While the first half goes off in a mild manner, the heat builds before the interval. The second half is quite gripping and it comes up with good intensity. 

The film shines due to its exceptional technical values and narrative. However, the subject is very dangerous and it could affect weak minds. At the box office, the film has strong chances of commercial success given the cost of its making.
